NEW SCHOOL AT MCMILLIN LOMAS VERDES NAMED WOLF CANYON ELEMENTARY
----
Wolf Canyon Elementary has been chosen as the name of the newest educational facility at the master-planned community of McMillin Lomas Verdes in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista. The decision was made at the March 6 Chula Vista Board of Education meeting.
Suggested by The Corky McMillin Companies and others in the community, the name Wolf Canyon is descriptive of one of the original landmarks of the school property. Located just two blocks north of the school is Wolf Canyon Park, a 1/2-acre recreation area located in the heart of McMillin Lomas Verdes and between these two sites is Wolf Canyon.
“It seemed only appropriate for the elementary school to be named Wolf Canyon Elementary, considering the school’s location on Wolf Canyon Loop,” said Johnson. “Additionally, it is representative of the history that McMillin and the community of Chula Vista work so hard to preserve.”
Construction on Wolf Canyon Elementary School is scheduled to be completed this August, with the doors opening to students in September for the fall semester, according to Chula Vista Board of Education Vice President Larry Cunningham.Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, along with other city dignitaries and school board members ceremoniously broke ground for the new elementary school in January.
The $22 million, 65,000-square-foot facility will consist of six buildings including administration, multipurpose and library uses and 32 classrooms. Each classroom will use superior technology to display course curriculum, student work, instructional materials, and Internet information.
“It is such a pleasure for McMillin to have the opportunity to partner with the school district on another elementary school in Lomas Verdes,” said Johnson. “This school embodies a technologically advanced way of educating the children of the community and preparing them for the future.”
Other schools at McMillin Lomas Verdes include Corky McMillin Elementary School, Olympian High School, which officially opened its doors to students this past fall, and Mater Dei Catholic High School, where construction is under way with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2007.
In addition to the new schools at McMillin Lomas Verdes, the community encompasses five parks totaling 14 acres along with numerous trails and pathways, allowing easy pedestrian access to all parts of the community. The parks are linked by a series of pathways and streets offering the perfect setting for hiking, biking and jogging.
Located in the center of the Otay Ranch community in Chula Vista, McMillin Lomas Verdes is conveniently located near exciting recreation and entertainment destinations such as Knott’s Soak City U.S.A. water park, Coors Amphitheater and the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Only 20 miles southeast of downtown San Diego and close to employment centers and widely acclaimed Chula Vista schools.
