Mark McMillin, president and CEO of The Corky McMillin Companies, has been inducted into the California Building Industry Association's Hall of Fame, announced Gail Grimm with the California Homebuilding Foundation.
“The California Homebuilding Foundation pays tribute to individuals whose contributions have resulted in the long-term advancement of the home building, construction, developing, marketing, finance or related services within the building industry in California and who are involved in civic, social and philanthropic organizations in their communities,” said Grimm.  McMillin joins Julie Brinkerhoff-Jacobs, Lifescapes International, Inc.; Donald Jacobs, JZMK Partners; Carol J. Galante, BRIDGE Housing Corporation; Harlan Lee, Lee Homes; John Martin, Martin & Associates; Gilbert “Mike” Meyer, Greenbriar Homes Communities; and Michael J. Winn, Michael Winn Associates as the eight 2008 honorees elected for the statewide hall of fame.

Last year's inductees include Barry Berkus, B3 Architects/Berkus Design Studio; Donald Chaiken, Davidon Homes; Rod DeLuca, Rod DeLuca Development; Stephen Doyle, Brookfield Homes; Lester Goodman, The Ryness Company; and, Michael McGee, Pardee Homes.

As a 30-year veteran of the home-building industry and third-generation real estate entrepreneur, McMillin has been proactive in the BIA of San Diego County since entering the field and has made numerous contributions over the years.

In light of his induction and to extend his generosity to those who have helped him along the way, McMillin is establishing an endowment in his father's name for the Mark and Corky McMillin Foundation.  A portion of the $50,000-donation will be directed toward several of the local institutions in which McMillin is an active member, including the University of San Diego, University of California, San Diego and the San Diego State University Alumni Association.

Son of the late Corky McMillin, Mark virtually grew up on construction sites and, upon graduation from San Diego State University in 1978, took on a leadership position within the family organization. As president and CEO, McMillin participates in the strategic planning and corporate decisions for the entire organization, which includes home building, both commercial and residential land development, mortgage lending and resale home sales.
McMillin has left a substantial impact on the BIA of San Diego County. His service includes membership on the board of directors from 1994 to 2003, including serving as secretary in 1995, treasurer in 1996, vice president in 1997, president in 1998 and past president in 1999. Under his presidency, he established the BIA communications committee and hired the organization's first internal communications director, thus making internal communication an organizational priority. The establishment of this committee led to the highly successful “Crusader” get-out-the-vote program, among other innovative communication strategies. Additionally, Mark McMillin was named the BIA's Industry Professional of the Year in 1996, largely due to his spearheading of the widely successful Tour d'Elegance fundraising events for the organization for two consecutive seasons, which raised $60,000 and $80,000 for the BIA. He also oversaw the retooling of the Installation Gala as the largest annual fundraiser for the organization.  Mark also holds the BIA record for the most members brought into the organization.

Other involvement by McMillin on a state and national level includes serving as a director of the National Association of Home Builders from 1996 to 2007, a member of the Political Action Committee for the California Building Industry Association from 2001 to 2007 and the California Major Builder Council in 2006 and 2007.

The McMillin organization, under Mark's leadership, has financially contributed to numerous non-profit organizations and recently earmarked significant contributions for institutions educating the future leaders of the local building industry.   McMillin endowed San Diego State University’s Real Estate Department in the amount of $1.5 million and donated $200,000 to Southwestern College to further education in the construction fields, along with $50,000 to University of San Diego to advance its commitment to educate the building industry's future executives.

Founded in 1960 by Corky McMillin, The Corky McMillin Companies is building 1,000 homes this year in San Diego, Bakersfield and Central Valley, Calif., as well as San Antonio, Texas; developing five master-planned communities in Southern California, and is the proud developer of Liberty Station, voted Base Redevelopment Community of the Year by the Association of Defense Communities.
